Academics and Swimming
Swimming and the Sciences
Swimming and science might seem like they have nothing in common, but
that's not true at all. Both require a focused mindset and one must pay close
attention to details. Working on technique in the pool, perfecting
flip turns or starts, mirrors the attention required to work in a
laboratory. Both utilize creativity in the ways one learns to solve
problems; you're always using your mind in the pool and in the classroom.
These two passions in my life compliment each other very well. Both
require lots of time, but have great payouts. It's all about positive
feedback; when you excel at one, you want to get better in the other.
The combination of a healthy body from swimming and a healthy mind
from academics makes for a college experience that is enriching and
exhilarating.

Swimming and Liberal Arts
Finding a balance between academics and athletics is important as a college student. Swimming for DePauw University keeps me focused on academics because it teaches valuable lessons about hard work and time management. The courses I take for my psychology and philosophy majors involve a large amount of reading and writing. The focus and discipline that swimming requires to train and perform well translates directly into analyzing Socrates or writing a thesis on cognitive processing.
Maintaining a balance between the pool and the classroom is made easier by the focus that is shared by everyone on the team. We are all committed to academic and athletic success and this positive attitude is spread throughout other areas of our lives. These two aspects of college life benefit each other because success requires determination and commitment; traits found common on the team.
