team in front of homeThe DePauw Tigers are beginning their quest for a fifth straight SCAC championship by starting a new tradition—team based community service.  Alex Troxel, co-captain for the 2008 season, came to Coach Cohen last year with the idea.  Alex pointed out to him that many members of the team were doing community service and that having the team do it together would be a natural progression.  Alex had a special interest in Habitat after spending his spring break last year helping to rebuild communities that were torn apart by Hurricane Katina.  After contacting the local Habitat for Humanity, 28 swimmers and divers set out for a day of painting and yard work.  As  Junior Steve Klabak said, “It was not only gratifying for the team, but  it was amazing to see how much work 28 guys could do in just a few hours.”   The team has already lined up a night with a local Brownie group to teach them the water safety skills necessary for the Brownies to earn their merit badges .   As Junior Charlie Boehme said “All of us on the team know we are part of something special both as college athletes and as DePauw Students.   Many of us enjoy community based work, and being able to do it as a team just makes it that much tighter.”  You can see a photo slide show of the team at work by clicking here.  Learn more about Habitat for Humanity by clicking here.
